Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us on Facebook, Instagram or at info@scrapcityjiujitsu.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Jiu Jitsu is a grappling martial art that originated as a self defense but has become a hobby and sport practiced around the world. It shares techniques with Wrestling and Judo to get an opponent to the ground. Once there,  Jiu Jitsu uses moves to get to advantageous positions where the opponent could not harm you but you could harm your opponent if need be. Once in these strong positions, Jiu Jitsu goes further to teach you how to finish an opponent with a wide variety of submission attacks which would cause your adversary to submit, face serious injury, or be choked out. These submissions include a very wide variety of chokes, arm locks, leg locks, etc. Traditional Jiu Jitsu is performed in a GI. A Gi is a martial arts uniform that is meant to resemble clothing. Jiu Jitsu uses the Gi (clothing) for many of its moved and chokes. That's right, learn to choke people with their clothes! We also offer Nogi Jiu Jitsu which does not utilize clothing.

Not so much in training but in a real life scenario it would be very dangerous to a would be attacker, school bully, etc.  Fact is, Jiu Jitsu is actually much safer for kids and adults than many other common sports.

  • In training, anytime you would like out of a position or submission you can tap to your partner and they will instantly let go.
  • Submissions are applied slowly in training to allow ample time to tap.
  • Training is tailored to skill level. If you're training with someone more experienced they will work with you and help you.

YES!

  • No need to be in shape AT ALL! It gets you into shape while you have fun!
  • No need for any experience at all.
  • Nobody is too old. Applicable to everyone 4+ years old.
  • It's safe!

Submission grappling is performed in shorts and a tight fitting shirt. It is very similiar to Jiu Jitsu but is without the Gi on. Its commonly reffered to as "Nogi". It utilizes a lot of wrestling and is faster paced.

Adults- If you are brand new to Jiu Jitsu/Grappling than its best to show up for your first class on a Tuesday or Thursday for the 6PM fundamental classes. If that time frame is  not fitting to your schedule than another option would be to come to the all levels class at 11AM on a Wednesday or Friday. Try to arrive 15 minutes early if possible and wear athletic style clothing. If its a Gi class, we often have one you can borrow to try a class! If not you can just wear athletic clothing.

Kids- All kids need is athletic style clothing and a bottle of water to get started. Kids can try any class Mon-Thurs at 5PM

No need to be nervous! Most people only wish they had started sooner but here are a few options.

  • Schedule a private lesson to break the ice and see if its for you
  • Come watch a class
  • Check it out on youtube
  • Please contact us with any concerns about starting
